really is like a football game. Every day you have to show up with your
game face on and be ready to play. However, showing up isn't enough.
You have to get in the red zone and then be effective once you are there.
How often is your team operating in the red zone?
As a new home consultant during the 1980's I was extremely
successful in some of the worst markets and
some of the worst locations. I sold homes when interest rates were double
digit, during recessions, across the street from the city dump, and just short
of times of plague and pestilence. What was I consistently outselling
other salespeople in my office? I still use the same principles I learned
then, today.

In
my twenty plus years in the homebuilding industry, I've seen
well-intentioned people fail to make something happen because they won't
roll out a good plan. They want a perfect plan. Waiting for
the market to recover is pretty much the same thing. You can't win
the ball game if you aren't on the field. You're either on offense
or defense, but you need to be in the game. |
How does your current playbook read?

The market stinks so we should all
just give up, go home, and wait it out.

This business is cyclical and we
can still make money in the slow times.
If you picked the second statement,
one right out of our playbook, then you believe that opportunity remains. The key is to understand what the opportunity is,
know what you're up against, and develop a playbook filled with both offensive and defensive strategies to
create opportunity and make things
happen.
And you can't just play defense!
If you do, the defense wears out,
collapses, and the other team marches up the field to victory. On any given Saturday, football teams go into the locker room
down at the half, yet come out and win the game. Football games are won because coaches
adjust the game plan during the half.
